Doug and his family, Dr Martha Scott, Arran aged 9 and Ewan aged 6, together with Terry Mooney a Trustee of Community Action Nepal, visited this area after being alerted to the need for a Health Post at Li Goan by Thrangu rinpoche. Thrangu Rinpoche instigated the building of a monastery in 2001 at Nubri Hinang up above Li Goan. The monks at this monastery are trying to lift the local people not only spiritually but also by improving the quality of education and health care, so far lacking in the area. Community Action Nepal have agreed to build this Health Post in partnership with the local people and also rebuild and staff the local school.
Whilst the area is very poor; the landscape is powerful and uplifting, being a beautiful, unspoilt highland region. The people whilst being materially poor are rich in community spirit and offer warm hospitality to visitors. Manaslu is the worlds eighth highest summit and we trek in this wild, remote and little travelled area and encircle the north face and ridges of manaslu that reach right down to the valley.
Having recently returned from this 18 day trek, Dougs comments were that it was so incredibly beautiful and the people reminded him of the Khumbu 30 years ago! He reckons this is the best trek in Nepal! This is a unique opportunity to experience this area and at the same time support the building of the Health Post and School.
It is possible to arrange for part of the journey in the North to be on horse-back at a small extra cost.
From the historical town of Gorkha, the trek heads north following the valley of the Buri Gandaki, which cuts through the Himalaya. carving a precipitous and most impressive gorge along much of its length. After several days on the trail, the river abrubtly turns west and follows the wall of high mountains that mark the frontier with Tibet. At this point the scenery opens up to reveal the impressive faces of Manaslu, Peak 29 and Manaslu North. We slow our pace to acclimatise to increasing altitude. The people of this remote and sparsley inhabited region are Buddhists of Tibetan descent. Their villages, with names like Li, Sho and Lo, are typical, with Pagoda gates, prayer walls and monasteries known as gompas, set in this hidden valley.
Once over the 5135m Laryka La, a whole new view unfolds and we camp under the mightly west face of Manaslu, in pristine forest of giant conifers. We then start our descent, following the Dudh Khola to join the Marsyangdi, from where a further two days trekking bring us to the road.If you're looking for an alternative to the Annapurna circuit, a trek amidst fantastic scenery but without the 'crowds', then Manaslu is an option to consider. The trek is graded 'fairly strenuous' to 'strenuous', because of its length but only two days are spent over 4000m, so altitude is usually less of a problem than on the Everest treks for example. Nevertheless we do cross one high pass on this route, the demands of which may challenge even experienced trekkers. What you have to bring with for to do Trekking please Click here |
