The trek to the base camp of the world's fifth highest mountain is considered by many to be among the finest in Nepal, and with good reason. It combines several of the essential ingredients of a good trek: the sensational views of a ridge walk, the challenge of a high pass, and beauty of an unspoiled wilderness. The contrasts of scenery encountered along the way are quite simply unrivalled, from the lush sub-tropical Arun Valley to the stark beauty of Makalu, its glaciers and awesome granite south face.

The trek starts by following a high ridge above the Arun Valley. After several days on the trail, we cross the river and, leaving the villages behind, begin the long climb to Shipton La. The 4217m pass opens up staggering views of Chamlang and Makalu which stay with us as we follow the Barun Valley to the base camp. The route takes us through the Makalu-Barun National Park, which is known for its abundant bird populations and varied but elusive mammal species, among them snow leopard, forest leopard, red panda, grey wolf, Himalayan black bear and musk and barking deer. After a day at base camp, a wild and scenic spot watched over by the impressive south face of Makalu, we begin the return trek to Tumlingtar, taking an alternative route following the floor of the Arun Valley.
