The trek to Pang Pema and the North Base Camp of Kangchenjunga ranks as one of the most memorable in Nepal. The route is stunning in terms of scenery and fascinating for the variety of peoples and cultures encountered along the way. To begin with the trail winds along the valley of the Tamur, populated by the Limbu who farm its fertile terraced slopes. Several days into the trek, the valley narrows and our route now weaves through forests of rhododendron, laced with cascading waterfalls, which tumble over the steep slopes to the floor below. Climbing higher, the valley abruptly opens to an alpine landscape and we are now among Sherpa villages with their Buddhist mani walls and fluttering prayer flags. The icy wall of Jannu 'peak of terror' looms above, while around us in the valley, islands of pasture nestle among the boulders and moraines. The base camp of Kangchenjunga is still a day or more away and the altitude, if not the distracting scenery, will slow most groups down. As each hour passes a new mountain comes into view until we are in a vast cirque formed of Wedge Peak, Ramtang, Kambachen, Yalung Kang and, crowning them all, 8598m Kangchenjunga. It was from here in 1979 that Doug Scott, Pete Boardman, Joe Tasker and Georges Bettembourg prepared for the third ascent of the mountain, and the first ascent of the north west side.
Though the return trek follows mostly the same route, everything looks different in reverse and you are likely to see many things missed on the walk in.

Fitness & Experience : Though the trek is not unduly strenuous and the height gain is gradual, the cumulative effects of altitude and walking day after day create their own challenges. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential as long as you are a regular, fit mountain walker. Rest days allow for acclimatisation and a more relaxed pace.
