Arguably one of the finest trekking routes in Nepal, this long but enormously rewarding walk goes deep into the remote ranges which lie on the Kingdom's eastern border with Sikkim. The roughly circular route links the north and south base camps of Kangchenjunga, by trekking over the Mirgin La, a pass which offers unforgettable views of the Himalaya, stretching as far as the Khumbu Peaks and Makalu.

The first days of the trek take us through the luxuriant forests and terraced farmlands of the Tamur Valley, whose clear river offers many tempting bathing spots. As the valley narrows to a gorge, we climb high into forests of rhododendron, where numerous waterfalls leap over its steep walls to the floor below. In its upper reaches, the valley opens to an alpine landscape, dominated by the icy wall of Jannu, 'peak of terror'. We are now among the Buddhist mani walls and fluttering prayer flags of the Sherpa villagers, who graze their livestock on islands of pasture, nestled among the boulders and moraines.

We head now for the north base camp of Kangchenjunga and Pang Pema, where we have two days free to explore our surroundings and soak up the incredible scenery. The campsite is at 5139m, lying at the entrance to a vast cirque formed of Wedge Peak, Ramtang, Kambachen, Yalung Kang, the Twins, Cross Peak and 8598m Kangchenjunga. Retracing our steps to the Sherpa village of Ghunsa, we begin the long climb to the Mirgin La. Crossing the 4640m pass, the views can be utterly captivating, with Makalu, Chamlang and the Khumbu peaks ranged to the west. Our descent brings us to the Simbua River, leading to Kangchenjunga's southern face and the awesome Yalung Glacier. Here we have a free day for exploration of the uninhabited and truly wild area surrounding the south base camp. The trek back to Taplejung ends in the lush farmlands of the mostly Buddhist Kiranti, Tamang and Sunwar peoples.

Fitness & Experience : The length of this trek, the remoteness of the region and the number of days spent at high altitude makes it more demanding than most. Several rest days allow time for acclimatisation and a more relaxed pace. Previous trekking experience is definitely helpful.
