Fitness & Experience : This is a strenuous trek, most of which takes place in a remote and wild part of Nepal but is within the capabilities of most fit walkers. Previous trekking experience is as asset.
This long and rewarding trek offers the chance to climb Teng Gongma, a peak in the spectacular mountains that straddle the border of Nepal and neighbouring Sikkim. Towering over the region is 8598m Kanchenjunga, the third highest summit in the world, which was first climbed by Charles Evans in 1955. Our trek starts through the lush farmlands and sub tropical forest climbing steadily to the alpine north base camp of awesome Kanchenjunga, where in 1979 Doug Scott and his fellow climbers prepared for the third ascent of the summit and the first from the north.
Doug and climber Roger Mear were in the area again in 1998 to climb a new summit, Drohmo. While acclimatising for their attempt they made routes up two other summits in the area. Point 6019 and Teng Dongma (6225m) can be classed as trekking peaks and suitable for fit trekkers looking for an extra challenge. Doug and Roger were accompanied by climbing Sherpas Sherab Jangbu and Narwang Karsang, who actually beat them to the top on a separate rope, and in doing so became the first Nepalese to climb the mountain and the second overall.
Sherab Jangbu should be available to lead these treks. He has now climbed 6 of the 14 800 metre summits and is the only climber in the world to ascend K2 twice.
The trek alone is graded very strenuous because of the cumulative effect of walking dat after day, coupled with the several days spent at high altitude. Anyone wishing to do the climb (this is optional and the extra days can be spent instead on further exploration at lower altitude) must have previous experience of winter climbing and be confident in the use of ice axe, ropes and crampons. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the climb, or your suitability for it, please do contact our office.
There is the possibility of making a new route up Teng Kongma from the west, this will obviously depend upon weather, snow conditions and team experience.
