days: Restricted area; trek requires: special permit $ 700 min for 10 days + $ 70 /- extra day.
The setting for Peter Matttheisson's, The Snow Leo-Pard, and Dolpo forms a 2100sq mile plateau inside Nepal 's north-west frontier with Tibet . Much of Dolpo is preserved in the She Phoksundo National Park , & is a restricted area requiring a special permit (see above). Its 4500 Tibetan speaking inhabitants live in 35 scattered villages & are descendants of Tibetan migrants who arrived before the 10 th century. Dolpo's remoteness and access restrictions make this one of the few areas of traditional Tibetan culture flourishing in the Himalayas today. Dolpo is an area of outstanding natural beauty where wild-life and flora are abundant. We fly from Kathamndu to Juphal and embark on an unforgettable trek through Upper Dolpo , passing a gorge, the greatest waterfall in Nepal , a 5000m pass and a few villages. We have views of API Himal, Saipal, Himal, & fleeting glimpses of Dhaulagiri . After a 35 day trek, we arrive back in Jumla for the flight back to Kathmandu . During the months of May, June, July and August, many plants are in flower. Vegetation includes dwarf juniper. RaRa Lake is a national park area in itself. Nepal 's largest lake, it contains the snow trout. The surrounding area is carefully protected.
